Day 16

12:00 PM: Can't remember if I finished yesterday's post. Probably not.

3:00 PM: Oh thank God. Protein shake.

Day 15

6:00 AM: Today will be the day. Today will be the day. Today will be the day.

Day 14

10:00 AM: I've been in class with these people for 2.5 years and can't remember their names. Ha.

11:00 AM: Yeah, I said "Res. Sup." instead of "Respondeat Superior." What of it? We all know the written abbreviation is "Res. Sup."

8:00 PM: Day 14 complete. I convinced Doc to let me finish out the week. I'm sure we have different understandings of what that means.

Day 13

8:45 AM: mnghoojk. Right?

5:45 PM: I apparently fell asleep in class today and didn't wake up when my name was called for attendance. It  took a couple of pokes from the person sitting behind me. We all had a laugh. Ahhh, the sound of 120 people laughing at you. It's so filling and warm and empowering; just like Fall Out Boy or crying babies, or nails on a chalkboard.

7:00 PM: Had a long talk to Doc about what happened. He's concerned. Here's a summary of the conversation.

Damn right I'm concerned. When you fall asleep and don't wake up as you normally would, it's called unconscious unresponsive. I'm afraid you passed out, not fell asleep.

Okay. So, say I went on a 4 day camping trip where I didn't sleep much, expended more than usual energy and ate less than usual. If when I got home I showered, got in bed, and fell asleep, but was difficult to wake up because I was so tired, would I be unconscious unresponsive? Would I have passed out or fallen asleep.

No, that's different. In that case you would have made a conscious decision to fall asleep.

Well, what if I made a conscious decision to doze off in my chair before class started?

IF you did that, THEN it would be sleeping.

                Then, that's what happened.

....When this started, you promised full disclosure, otherwise I said I wouldn't do this.

Fine, it was more like, I consciously decided to stop preventing myself from sleeping in chair before class.

                 That's a pretty weak distinction.

It's a fair distinction. It means I'm negligent like a truck driver who falls asleep at the wheel, not endangering my health.

You've bought yourself a day. Call me tomorrow after class.

10:00 PM: Goodnight. Hope tomorrow isn't unconscious unresponsive.

Day 12

8:00 AM: FML. Ha.

5:30 PM: In class for two hours. Can't wait to get home for protein shake.

Monday, January 16, 2012

Day 11

9:00 AM: Power is finally restored. Going to celebrate by watching Community. Very Excited because I didn't get my protein shake yesterday. It's still damn cold in here.

5:45 PM: Been so busy working on Greendale Weekly, I've forgotten to keep updating posts. Protein shake was fantastic. Exactly what I needed.

8:00 PM: School starts back tomorrow; final semester. Pretty hard to do the reading for class tomorrow. Could be a problem.

Day 10

11:15 PM: messed up day. Lack of posts not for health reasons, but for travel and computer reasons. More later or tomorrow.

Written on Day 11.:

So got back to Cincinnati. Found out that the power company had mistakenly turned off our power (but not our gas). Account was completely up to date, they turned off our power along with another apartment but only were supposed to do the other. Since the thermostat was electric, we could use the gas stove, but not the gas central heat. We could see our breath. The utility couldn't have anyone out to turn it back on because it needed a reconnect order, which can't be issued on a Sunday because on Sunday, all calls are routed to North Carolina so that only people in North Carolina get any service.

Anyway, now it's Monday, and the power is back (after I called and raised hell when it wasn't turned back on immediately at 7:00 AM.

Weigh-in 2

Can't decide if this is weigh-in 1 (since it is the first since the strike really got going) or weigh-in 2 (after the initial weigh-in).

Either way: I've dropped 8.7 lbs in about as many days.

That's less than I was expecting.

Doc: a little less than expected, but it makes sense. A pound is about 3,000 calories. While you've cut most of your calories, you've also sat on your ass and slept most of the time, so you haven't been burning much.  Plus, once you stop getting the amount of calories you need in a day, your metabolism slows down and enters starvation mode, so you actually burn less calories than had you kept eating.

okay.

            Doc: Yes.

Day 9

10:00 AM: uuughhh

10:15 AM: Just got this. Made my day! Absolutely brilliant. I want to see Catherine doing this in the background of every scene for an entire episode. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLv0weVb6QQ

It takes way more courage to dance, alone, in front of a large group of people, without music than to just not eat anything.

5:45 PM: Forgot to post earlier, but I weighed-in earlier. The results are in another post.

My wife had an inspired idea for my next project/way to spruce up the blog. Check back later for more details. (I promise, the idea is more than just, "leave them in suspense and make them check back later so people check the blog obsessively).

1:00 AM: Sat down to work on the new project at 6 PM and just looked up. Never underestimate the power of distraction.

For readers of the blog, an early look at "Greendale Weekly"; Greendale Community College'sv only daily, online newspaper. Greendale Weekly

Day 8

5:45 AM: As I find myself awake before 6:00 AM for no particular reason, and see that today is day 8, I am thinking to myself, "Sir, you are a Grade A, Premium, 93 Octane idiot."

I respond: "Top of the line, but still an idiot."

            "Yes," I reply.

Then I stop because I realize it is 6 in the morning and I am talking to myself.

7:00 AM: I relate the story to Doc. He laughs.

"I'd be more worried if your dogs were talking to you, or if you didn't realize you were talking to yourself."

I can't help but think about homeless people who talk to themselves. I honestly hope they are crazy and not just hungry.

This experience better not turn into a bottle episode.

7:15 AM: Jason sits down on the floor with Duncan and Scottie. He deals everyone seven cards for "Go Fish." Duncan and Scottie call the game "Get Treat."
                 "Any Jacks?"
Duncan and Scottie stare at Jason.
"I'll take that as 'Get Treat.'"
Duncan and Scottie jump, spin, hop on two legs, bark, and act they are the one's who haven't eaten in eight days.

Right. At least they aren't talking. But I have started narrating.

Jason decides that's enough for now.

10:00 AM: When brainstorming ideas to help #savecommunity, do not listen to "Grenade" by @BrunoMars or "I Can't Decide" by @scissorsistors. If you are delirious, you will end up with a list of ways to kill yourself and a list of ways to kill NBC executives.

4:00 PM: Protein Shake time. Check back later for 2nd weigh-in.

1:30 AM: Fell asleep on the couch around 6 PM. Woke up to a bunch of notes of encouragement. Thanks a lot for the support. Much needed. Gonna do the weigh-in tomorrow morning and go back to sleep. In bed this time.

Day 7

8:00 AM: One week if at 8:00 PM. So tired. Probably driving from Toledo to Cincinnati today in order to beat the snow that's coming tomorrow.

3:00 PM: Best part about the hunger strike? It's like a Guster jukebox is playing in my head.

8:00 PM: Made it one full week. Didn't have enough energy to drive back to Cincinnati, I'll have to try it after a shake tomorrow. It's the first snow of the season, so I think it is finally fitting that I get to say this:

WINTER IS COMING.

10:00 PM: I'm thinking I need to do something to spice this blog up for week two. Comment with ideas. Keep in mind, I have about as much energy as a sloth. Perhaps something to do every other day after the protein shake.

Also, something else... Too tired to think of it. It was very funny. In the alternate universe where I remembered what it was, you all laughed a lot. In that universe, Community was returned tomorrow and my hunger strike ended.

Day 6

9:00 AM: Hey Doc, my legs hurt this morning. Any relation?

Doc: Yes, you've been eating them.

12:00 PM: So out of it that I forgot to publish the first bit of today's post. I'm gonna drink a protein shake so hard later. Need to go back and check; make sure I get one today cause I can't remember.

Okay, good. Gotta Remember: even numbered days are good days.

Tuesday, January 10, 2012

Day 5

8:00 AM: Coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee....

11:00 AM: Found out car was totaled in the accident last week. Boo today.

6:30 PM: Apologies, only thing I have to say is ugh.

8:00 PM: Day 5 complete. Good night... maybe.

11:30 PM: No rest for the wicked. I have decided that having tea would not violate the rules.

Monday, January 9, 2012

Day 4

10:00 AM: Sorry about the lack of posts from yesterday evening. Yesterday was the hardest day by far; really looking forward to a protein shake today. Couldn't fall asleep until 4 AM and was up at 8 AM.

Thanks for all the support. Today, tell NBC what you're eating and tell them I'm not eating anything till Community is back. #hungertoendhiatus

3:30 PM: I'm so excited for my protein shake it's pretty pathetic.

9:00 PM: Protein shake good. Much less pain in my stomach, should be able to sleep well tonight.

Sunday, January 8, 2012

Day 3

12 PM: Slept late, thankfully. I think some dormant reptilian genes have become active because my body is definitely saving energy by becoming cold-blooded.

Doc says: "Put on a sweater and stop complaining."

Great advice...

5:45 PM: Fueled by coffee. I've noticed I'm having a harder time writing posts; grammar and spelling especially. Also figured out why superheros wear their underwear outside their pants (I'm not claiming I'm a superhero, just that I've put myself in a situation superheros must find themselves in). Superheros are too busy to eat, so they get all fuzzy in the brain. Today I put underwear on top of underwear. Clearly Superman did something similar, I imagine on day three of being too busy to eat.

Saturday, January 7, 2012

Day 2

11:00 AM: I slept most of the morning away. Huzzah! Drinking coffee from an inferior mug at the moment. I've never looked forward to a protein shake more in my life. More later.

8:00 PM: Just drank the best protein shake ever. Well, probably not, but I was going a bit crazy, so it seemed like it was at the time.

I probably should say this more often. Don't try this at home. And if you're stupid enough to try this at home, only try it at home. It's far too hard being at the In-laws and doing this.

Friday, January 6, 2012

Day 1

1:30 PM: Feeling kinda like this. Thank God for coffee. More later in the day.

3:20 PM: It occurred to me that I've already broken my rules. My Troy and Abed in the Morning mug is in Cincinnati; I've been drinking coffee out of inferior coffee cups.

7:00 PM: Hardest thing I've done so far is smell food that other people are about to eat. I refuse to watch.

9:00 PM: Chuck was brilliant, as usual.

11:00 PM: Time for bed. Will tomorrow be easier?

Initial Weigh-In

Looks like I didn't reach the 200 lbs. mark. Initial weight 192.6 lbs. Max weight loss is 38.5 lbs to take me down to 154.1 lbs. Last time I weighed less than 160 lbs I was probably in middle school. That makes me feel old. Old and hungry, which undoubtedly will also make me feel crotchety.

More on how my first day goes later.

Last Meal, etc.

1/6/12

At 6:30 PM today I ate my last meal of the hiatus. It was a combination of the what I will miss most and the best food to keep me going: Plenty of protein, complex carbs, and good fats. From the Barada Restaurant in Toledo I had Humus and lamb, raw kibbe (essentially lamb tartar), fattoush with chicken, and about 5 loaves of pita bread. For dessert, I had left over Christmas cookies and a large jar of various chocolate candy (mostly Hershey's Kisses). This probably wouldn't be my last meal if I was on death row, but it was delicious and about 2000 calories.

Tomorrow morning, after I drop the kids off at the pool, I'll do my initial weigh-in. I'm hoping that the holidays fattened me up to about 200 lbs (90.7 kg for the Brits).

Edit: Stats tab shows I've had views in Russia, Canada, and Australia. Apologies, weight in kg is also for your benefit.
